What is the S&P/ASX 100?

The S&P/ASX 100 is designed to measure the 100 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalization. The index is float-adjusted, with securities that are highly liquid and, therefore, institutionally investable. The S&P/ASX 100 includes both large- and mid-cap components of the S&P/ASX index universe.

What is the ASX 100 Index?

The index contains the 100 largest ASX listed stocks with the cut-off being a market capitalisation of ~$1.7 billion (AUD). Constituents account for ~73% (September 2023) of Australia’s sharemarket capitalisation. The ASX 100 is well diversified with all 11 GICS Sectors represented.

When did the S&P/ASX 100 start trading?

The S&P/ASX 100 launched on 3 April 2000 and commenced trading on 23 August 2000. XTO, ^AXTO and INDEXASX:XTO. Since inception, the index has returned 4.22% p.a. excluding dividends and 8.70% including dividends (Jan 2022). Rebalances occur quarterly in March, June, September and December, and constituent turnover is relatively low.
